What Is Cerumen (Ear Wax)?
Cerumen — ear wax — is produced naturally to protect and moisturize your ear canal, and most ears are self-cleaning. But wax can build up and form a blockage, which may cause earaches, pressure or fullness, a plugged sensation, changes in hearing, tinnitus, or itching. When that happens, professional removal is the safest and most effective option.
Safe At-Home Care
For mild buildup, the following gentle methods are safe to try at home. Important: if you have — or suspect you may have — a hole or tubes in your eardrum, check with a professional before placing any liquid in your ears.
- Gently clean the outer ear with a damp washcloth
- Use over-the-counter wax-softening drops as directed — or a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil, or diluted (1:1) hydrogen peroxide
- Flush gently with room-temperature water or saline using a bulb syringe
- Never insert cotton swabs, hair pins, keys, toothpicks, ear candles, or any other tools into the ear canal
